FUN CRAFTS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS ENTERTAINED THIS SUMMER

There’s no better time than summer to get some awesome craft projects underway. The kids are off school, the weather is fine, and the days are long. But these aren’t just for the older kids, have fun with your little ones too. Arch loves doing little mini projects, and we have an array of pretty pictures and different crafts that we have done together. These are great too if it’s raining, or if you just aren’t feeling a mummy and toddler group. Also I’d recommend checking your local library, ours offer a craft day once a week, and during the holidays they do lots of fun themed crafts too..great for the little ones. Even if it only keeps Arch entertained for 10 minutes! Anyway on to the crafts.

I’ve collected a few things over the last few months in a box, crazily known as the craft box. Original I know. In the craft box we have felt, buttons, paints, paper, pom poms…and you get where I am going with this. I actually pick up bulk sets when the sales are on. Because let’s’ be honest I don’t think our little ones are going to care if the craft pack is ‘last seasons’. Obviously I keep tools like scissors, glue and spray adhesives out-of-the-way in a cupboard, and I use these when doing certain things..though Arch is just about getting the hang of glue.

There’s nothing more summer-esque than building a den and playing outside all day, watching the stars at night and nothing is as tasty than a smore! Grab a sheet, a bunch of pillows and fill your day making daisy chains and going on nature hunts. The kids are sure to have fun!

Next we have a fun DIY which is super colourful, fun to make and should last a fair bit of time too. DIY chalk for your kids to draw some masterpieces on pavement in your back garden or on your street. Fun to make and fun to use..plus how cute do these look..lolly pop shapes. This is also a fun activity for kids all ages and a great one for the little ones in helping them learn colours.

DIY ADVENT CALENDER IDEAS

IMG_4748.JPG

Christmas is fast approaching, so I’ve scoured the internet for fun DIY advent calender ideas that you can do this weekend in time for the first in a couple of weeks. I think doing your own advent calender, whether it’s for you, a family or a friend, is so much nicer then buying the chocolate ones. Which let’s be honest most of the time get eaten way before Christmas day…no? just me? Also don’t panic, this picture is from last year, we don’t have a Christmas tree up yet.

Moving on, I remember I did a DIY advent Calender for Richard for our first Christmas in our own place. It was rather simple, just little fabric bags I made myself, hanging on a branch I spray painted white and put in a pot. Each day revealed a new Lego man he had to make up, plus some with a few sweets too. It was fun to make, and Richard rather enjoyed getting lots of little presents leading up to Christmas.

I wish I had a picture because it was so much fun, but this was 4 years ago now. My idea was really simple, and you can fill it with whatever you like, the persons favourite sweets, love notes, homemade vouchers..or little pocket-size things.

We are super lucky that Richards mum is super amazing at crafts and knitting, as she knitted a really lovely advent calender for Archer. Shes so good my mum has ordered two from her, one for each of my siblings (with kids) sorry Abby. Archer’s is obviously a little more special being as it’s her grandson. So everyday for 25 days, Archer gets a new knitted decoration to put on the tree. Last year he was still rather small but he enjoyed all the colours, so this year I’m super excited because he will understand that much more. I’ll do a daily instagram to show you each decoration, honestly they will melt your heart!

Anyway here are some of my favourite DIY advent calenders  hopefully they give you some inspiration to make your own!

The Fox and Star

This is a great one for a friend, nice and simple you can make the little bags yourself (tutorial on the blog) and fill with their favourite sweets or chocolate…maybe even miniature wine bottles too!dpp_00712Honey’s Life

A great one for family members, especially if you’re doing a joint one for kids or even kids and your partner. These can be filled with sweets or Christmas themed crafts and toys..the possibilities are endless.

This would be a good one for your partner.  You could put little vouchers in this, for a free massage or if your feel like splurging…shop vouchers. Or something just a simple as photographs with a little love note, from your time together. This would work for Grandparents too, lovely pics of grandchildren with notes and drawings. Something really sentimental, oooo and you could do it so on the 25th they receive a photo album to put all the images into….I kind of love this idea.

This is a great one for kids, having a little DIY scene is so much fun.Plus you could hide a note in each day which might be a riddle leading them to a chocolate around the house..all kids love treasure hunts..

So there you have it, some of my favourite Advent DIY’s. I’m seriously considering the envelope calendar for a grandparent…maybe next year so they forget about it, after reading it on here!

Have a lovely weekend all.

5 Kitchen DIY’s that are cheap, quick and effective.

5Kitchen-DIY's-taht-are-cheap,-quick-and-effective-

Original image from Oh Joy.

Ok, so we all love a bit of DIY, up cycling and crafting things around us. But even I have had times when I wish I could do half of the things pinned on my pinterest. But some projects are just too big, expensive, or unrealistic..we have all seen those epic fails..and I have had my fair share of them too..but I thought i’d feature some DIY’s that I have found, some of which I have done, which are budget friendly, simple and look great. I’ll be posting my top 5 once a week for different areas. Starting firstly with the kitchen…

Firstly, how amazing does this kitchen look? Just look at all the colour. Anyway to the DIY which comes from Oh Joy. Neon dipped storage jars is so effective and super cheap. You don’t even have to buy anything, as they don’t have to be neon. Just  using paint and the jars you already have you can add a dash of colour to your kitchen. This is great for renters, as it can distract away from ugly decor you can’t change!

Spruce up old cupboards with washi tape. You can get so many different types of wash tape every where nowadays and it’s not overly expensive either. This is another renter friendly tip too! As washi tape comes of beautifully easy and won’t leave a mark. Honestly how did we survive without this pretty clouded tape? See this DIY at Vorstellung Von Schon.

So simple, cheap and effective. Add colour to your utensils with paint. Just make sure you varnish it afterwards so its wash safe!! This DIY is from Earnest Home Co. I’ve seen this been done with an ombre effect which looks awesome!

I’d be surprised if no one has any lego laying around, if not at their place at their parents..but if not. Charity shops are a great place to look out for lego, and this DIY from The Kitchn will please anyone..

Last but not least, up cycle old mugs and cups with  1 simple tool. Sharpie. A great DIY and it’s super quick and cheap there’s no excuse not to try it!! This is from Don’t mind if I do. You can also get sharpie in gold now too just think of the possibilities!

So there are 5 quick, cheap simple DIY’s for your kitchen. A great way to clear out the cobwebs and add some colour and texture without breaking the bank or your back!

Upcycled Wicker unit

Ok so like I have mentioned countless times before I have been on a bit of a DIY/nesting mission the last couple of months, and as promised here is one of them which I did last month.

I’ve had this wicker unit for a couple of years now, and it’s always looked a bit drab and I wanted to spruce it up to put in my bathroom to add a bit more storage. Do you find that storage for specific areas like bathrooms always end up costing quite a bit? If you give a piece of furniture a function in a certain room..I find the cost always goes up..and with countless things to buy I wasn’t about to send another £30 on a storage unit to keep my extra shampoo in.

Anyway here is what the piece looked like before the make over.

Murky brown baskets, and a badly painted blue frame… So I gave it all a good sand and decided on a monochrome black and white finish. It was to be my statement  piece in the bathroom. I made sure to sand it down really well, firstly using a rougher grain of 80 then with a finer one of 120..for a lovely smooth finish.

I decided to spray paint the wicker baskets white, I went with the spray paint, as it was quick and easy and gave an even coverage..sometimes painting wicker with paint can be a pain..plus trying to get it in all the gaps can be a hassle. So i’d recommend spray paint for a quick and easy finish.

I then used a black sating silk paint, which takes a few more coats but goes on beautifully. I finished it all off with a generous spray of varnish, as it was going in the bathroom, so that protection from moisture was needed and then it was done. I did this in an afternoon, with an hour or so between coats..it realty didn’t take long at all.

So here is the finished result!

A close up of the wicker draws…

And the finished piece. Topped with a plant..( you can never have too many plants) and I now have a new storage system for my bathroom, which didn’t cost me much at all! But I was pretty happy with it, and it’s stood the test of many baths and showers..so thankfully the varnish is doing it’s job!

I will be doing a bathroom post soon for all you renters out there, on how to make your bathroom as pretty as the rest of your house..even with the strict rules of landlord in place! So keep an eye out for that coming soon!

Geometric Coloured Cork Board Makeover

A really easy and effective DIY today to make your office, kitchen , bedroom or just hallway look awesome and organised. As you know my new office is still looking fab and is surprisingly still clean with no paint spilled, but what I needed was to re-invent my old plain cork-board. Honestly, I am so impressed (not to toot my own horn) haha with how this turned out, and so cheap too!!

Up-cycled-memo-board-

What you need:

Masking tape

Cork-board

Selection of paints ( I used tester pots so it didn’t cost a fortune)

Paintbrush

Thats it!!

So firstly I picked a colour for the background and one for the border, and painted the cork-board and the border, using those colours. I picked a grey and like a pinkish purple.

Cork-Board-Makeover-

After I waited for it to dry I separated sections using thin masking tape, to make like a mosaic/stained glass effect.

I then spent a while..maybe like an hour, I’m clearly indecisive, to pick a few colours. I would recommend not picking more then 5 colours, I feel that maybe I should have left one off, but still I love the outcome. I also left a few with the original background colour too.

Then it’s simple just paint different sections different colours and make sure you wait for it to dry before taking the masking tape off! Honestly no matter how much you want to peak, wait til it’s bone dry.

Memo-board-make-over-Step-by-step-

Then I just touched up some of the edges up..and there you have it!

Simple, and a great way to give your cork-board a makeover. Then you just pin your inspiration and cute paper finds!!

Hope you like it!!

Weekend Antics: Legoland and a very wet bank holiday craft fair

Ok so the craft fair has been and done, and boy was it a wet one. I mean come on! It just didn’t stop. Where we had our stall, was a popular fair that normally attracts 1000’s, this one attracted more like a couple of hundred. We made a few sales at the start when the weather was nice, but once the down pour started, the place became empty, and most crafter’s left. We were lucky we sold just enough to cover our costs, and managed to barter some sausages too in exchange for a meat rub we did, but after talking to a few other stalls most had only sold 1 or 2 and a handful nothing. It’s such a shame when you think about how much work goes into to big shows like the one yesterday, and the effort of all the crafters. Anyway it’s always a learning curve I guess!

Craft-Show

So there’s our little store, so colourful right? I have to say I was pretty proud of it, as the last two weeks, I’ve hardly slept. But I was proud of the outcome. Was just a shame it wasn’t that busy.

Craft-Stalls

Just a few things we were selling, like the colourful chalkboards and wine racks. Plus my watermelon nesting table….

Lavender-syrup

And here are the god awful cakes I made as free samples for the lavender syrup..recipe to come soon. Hopefully you can make them better then me…

On another note we did go to Legoland, and we did have a blast in the Star Wars bit, but alas I didn’t have memory card in my camera, for the first like billion pictures I took, I know I have a degree in Photography..but anyway I managed to get a few of the mini land, which is super impressive.

So I took so many pictures of all the places like Denmark, France and USA, but I thought I’d share with you some UK ones.

London-Eye

Ok so the London scene was truly incredible. The time and money to make this must be insane, with the moving buses, and all the spot on details.. just look at the London eye..

Prine-georges-birthday

The scene at the back of Buckingham Palace. Prince Georges 1st birthday party, how awesome do the balloons look. As we know, Legoland did a big thing for the Royal Wedding when that happened too!

Superman-lego

So it was pretty fun to find random figures within the scene. So for USA they had NASA, and hidden away near the space shuttle was Yoda… my inner Star Wars geek loved this. But here we have Superman in a phone box amidst the London scene…

Trafalgar-sqaure

Here we can see the iconic London red bus travelling down Trafalgar Square and the iconic blue rooster…I mean the detail is just incredible. How cool would it be if this was your job…

Anyway bar the fact it was just me and Richard and we waited for hours on end for silly rides like learn how to drive a boat…it was a fun day out, ending with a small fortune being spent in the gift shop!

Hope you all had a good weekend!
